SAIL TUNING BY BATTEN (How to use carbon tuning batten set)
PWA sailors practice sail tuning by batten with tube hardness of batten and carbon percentages
such as 30, 60, 80 and 100% for various winds and sea surface conditions. In addition, they
are aware on rod-batten taper and thickness. Batten tuning helps sail power condition in
suitable posision. Windsurfers keep on sailing without rig change by this technic. LIBERTY
recommends 8.5mm carbon 100% tube batten for the tuning especially on ideal to slightly over
wind condition but tuning battens should be replaced on light wind condition for eliminating
unwanted power reduction. Battens are able to easily insert and remove in a moment.
Ideal wind condition
Put two battens in boom above two pockets which describe as No.4 and 5 in picture below.
This reduces backhand pressure and makes more controllable sail.
ideal to over wind condition
Put three battens into boom postion and above which are shown as No4, 5 and 6
in picture below for reducing excess power. Sail become confortable with this
tuning. Release down haul tention 2 to 3mm when you insert tuning batten. In general,
down haul tention tighten as maximum in over wind condition but this makes sail harder
and prevent sail flexibility, thus release down haul combined with tuning batten is effective.
It looks incosistent from theory but this setting brings mast bend more flexible and
realizes easy handling. Try this for your comfortable sailing.
Light wind condition
Tuning batten should be removed from sail on light wind condition otherwise sail would become power shortage.
Boom position batten, No.6 position, should be removed without exception
on light wind condition.
Batten tuning details
Put tuning batten accordingly. No.4 and 5 could be insert from slightly heavy
wind condition. No.6 is only for really heavy wind. Tuning batten should not be
insert more than tube-batten depth.
